Team Evangelion Racing at Super GT, Sepang

Last weekend I had the liberty to go and see for myself the famed Evangelion Racing Team at the Sepang International Circuit.
As a big racing fan (I’ve been a follower of Japan GT in Malaysia since it was introduced here) and also a big Evangelion fan, certainly it was a really good news for me. And thus armed with a pit walk pass and my rarely used A350, I made my way from busy city life of Kuala Lumpur to the silent and serene Sepang.

A collaboration between the Run’A racing and also Gainax, Team Eva Racing debuted earlier this year to promote the Shin Seiki Evangelion Shin Gekijouban (ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版 – Rebuild of Evangelion) movies. The team competes in the GT300 class of the Super GT (formerly known as Japan GT) using the Toyota Corolla Axio car bearing the number 31. The car is driven by Matsuura Kousuke and Koki Saga.
Matsuura KousukeAnd what’s a Super GT team without it’s GT Queens? And I must say, Team Eva has two of the best looking GT Queens this year, the lovely Yuuna Chiba, which dresses as RQ (Racing Queen) Asuka and the cute Mizutani Noa as RQ Rei. I am dissapointed that there is no RQ Mari tho. She would look cute with a nekomimi
(Yes, I am a fan of her with nekomimi. Problem?)
Yuuna Chiba
Mizutani NoaBack to the team, I really love their shirt which is based upon the colour of Eva Unit 01, purple and green, and a large head of Unit Shogoki at the back. Coincidentally, the racing livery of the car is also based upon this design, with the yellow headlamps that are used for GT 300 are portrayed as the eyes of if unit Shogoki. Nice touch there. Sadly they were not selling the shirt at Sepang, and I don’t really know if it can be ordered online. Oh well, I might ask radkliler to get it for me if he’s not broke yet.

The race itself was full of drama. Multiple crashes during the start, cars jumping chicane and banging each other a-la Initial D, and spinners at most of the corners. It’s a wonder that there was no major incident happened in the race. It was finally won by the Calsonic GT-R team followed by fellow Motul GT-R. (For a good review of the race, you can visit Traffic Magazine’s Online race report here)
For team Eva? They finished 8th in GT 300, the place where their started. They had gone as high as fifth before a spin scuppered their progress in the field

Well it was a good weekend for me, although I was also expecting team Good Smile Racing, but they decided to skip this round. For team Evangelion, I hope the best for them in the remaining rounds of the Super GT. I hope we meet again next year!
