Event to be graced by Japanese J-Pop and ‘Ani-Song’ Star May’n

Singapore / Kuala Lumpur, 5 March 2013 – Following last year’s successful Animax Carnivals in Malaysia, Taiwan and the Philippines, Animax (Astro Ch 715), Asia’s first channel specializing in anime, is set to bring its signature event back to Kuala Lumpur. To be held on 16 and 17 March at Sunway Pyramid, Animax Carnival 2013 will be graced by Japanese guest star, J-pop and ‘Anisong’ (songs featuring in Japanese anime programs) diva, May’n (Macross Frontier, Shangri La, Accel World).

Starting from 10am on 16 March, at the Blue Concourse of Malaysia’s first themed shopping and entertainment mall at Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya, Animax will offer Astro customers and all visitors to Sunway Pyramid a weekend of traditional and modern carnival games and fun activities from Japan.
“We welcomed more than 8,000 visitors to the inaugural Animax Carnival in 2012, and we are pleased to bring the event back bigger and better this year. Just as Animax serves up great anime programs to viewers of all ages in Malaysia and across Asia, Animax Carnival will offer something for everyone in the family, and make for a fun and engaging weekend to ring in the March school holidays,” said Mr Ricky Ow, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Networks, Asia, Sony Pictures Television.
Headlining Animax Carnival Malaysia 2013 is a special showcase by Japanese songstress May’n who is best known as the singing voice of character Sheryl Nome in the hit anime series Macross Frontier. From 1pm on 16 March, Day One of the event, May’n will be making an exclusive appearance and performing ‘live’ her latest hit ‘Chase the World’, the opening theme song of Animax’s new anime series Accel World, coming to Astro’s video-on-demand service this month. She will also be singing ‘HEAT of the Moment’ and ‘Kimi Shinitamo Koto Nakare’ which featured as the opening theme song in anime series Shangri-La.
Following May’n’s performance from 3pm, Animax will celebrate the launch of its latest, third season of hit anime series Fairy Tail (premiering 13 March, airing Mondays to Fridays at 7.30pm on Animax), with a screening of the ‘Tenrou Island’ arc episodes of the long-running series at the Animax Carnival Malaysia stage.

On 17 March, Day Two of the event, Animax’s Fairy Tail extravaganza continues into cosplay as the event will be the stage for some of the most colourful local cosplayers to show off their Fairy Tail costumes. Cosplay contestants will have to be at their best in putting together and donning the costumes of their favourite Fairy Tail character and perform to compete for prizes worth over RM10,000. Catch the cosplay contest semi-finals from 1pm and the finals from 4pm.
Off stage, the event lives up to being a carnival as attendees can try their hands at new and traditional Japanese carnival games through both days. These include ‘Wanage’, tossing of hoops over small toys; ‘Syateki’, shooting toys with a toy rifle; and ‘Darum Otoshi’, using a hammer to knock the layers off a multi-layered doll without it falling over. Participants who complete all carnival games can get their ‘Game Card’ fully stamped to win prizes. In addition, visitors can get a unique anime themed picture of themselves as a memento of Animax Carnival Malaysia.
Day One on 16 March, Animax Carnival Malaysia 2013 is open only to Astro customers from 10am – 6pm, and open to the public from 6pm. Astro customers should present their January, February or March 2013 Astro bill to redeem admission tickets for four, with the first 500 Astro Variety Pack customers entitled to a special gift. Cute, sexy and alluring, lowyat.net forumer and also cosplayer Sakana “Fishy” Sashimi has been making waves and also fans in Malaysia. Her feature in Danny Choo’s Otacool2 also means that she’s also known worldwide, and has lead her to be chosen as one of the maids at AFA’s School Days Maid Kissa, “Moe-chan”. Anime-Shrine managed to wiggle some time in her busy schedule to ask her some questions.

Anime-Shrine: First and foremost, thank you for giving us the time to be able to interview you. For sure you are now busy with work and all. And speaking for work, how does it feels like to be chosen as a representative for Moe Moe Kyun Maid Cafe
Sakana: Thank you, and it’s a pleasant surprise for me.

AS: Being that the Moe Moe Kyun cafe is a special cafe made specially for AFA (Anime Festival Asia), did you ever thought that you would be chosen?
S: Definitely not! I was really surprised when I was notified that I was chosen @@”

AS: How did the people there chose you?
S: The producers were searching for talent around the region. By chance they spotted me on (Danny Choo’s) OTACOOL2 magazine by KOTObooks where I cosplayed as a maid.

S: This will be the first time I will be a part of a maid’s café, so I’m certainly looking forward to this experience

AS: Anyways, when did you first start cosplaying?
S: Early 2010. I’m still a newbie

AS: Did you ever guess that you would be this popular when you started?
S: Well.. Cosplay is my hobby and I never thought of popularity when I just started my cosplay journey.

AS: Which cosplay did you love doing the most?
S: (Vocaloid character) Hatsune Miku! So I can go “Miku Miku shite ageru~” ^^ (a Hatsune Miku song. Can be viewed here)

AS: Why did you like it?
S: Because I’m a big fan of (Sega’s PSP Game)Project Diva. I love the way Miku sings and dances. I often imitate her action at home. Tee he~ (yes, she did “Tee he”. SO CUTE!)

AS: Any funny/weird stuffs that had happened during cosplay events/shoot?
S: There was a cosplay competition where I was cosplaying as (K-On!’s Hirasawa) Yui on stage. I pretended to be playing the guitar but unfortunately I hurt my finger and OHH BLOOD!! OAO!!!

The Japanese loves to personify anything, and in the case of the X-Box 360 game console, apparently it’s represented by Sanrokumaru-san (aka 360-san). And some of them made an appearance at the recently concluded Comiket 78




More creepy than anything else, we wonder if this is one of the reasons that the X-Box’s sale is quite low in Japan. The Microsoft PR team might need a more moe rebooting of Sanrokumaru, ala Madobe Nanami (the personification of Windows 7) to attract more of the moe otaku culture that is going strong now.

Usually, Kamen Riders would travel on bikes, but this time, they took the train yo! They won’t be alone, as  the lovely Miss Rina Akiyama, will be hiding out somewhere on a decked-out Ginza subway line train through May 9, as part of a promotional tie up with Tokyo Metro for the film Kamen Rider The Movie – Cho Den-ou Trilogy!

Last Sunday was even crazier as two hundred fans swarmed to Ueno station to take a joyride on the train for its first run and watch performances by Akiyama and other “Kamen Rider” characters. One excited fan commented, “I think I’ll ride the subway more often from now on.” Good for the ol’ chap, because who knows after this, he’ll get to meet Ultraman?
